After several days of temperatures near 100, we are about to get a quick shock back into springtime temperatures. Starting late Monday night into Tuesday morning, a strong cold front will cross through the Texas panhandle. With the front, we will see a drastic cool down as well as extremely strong winds. In some cases, we could experience wind gusts over 70 miles per hour.

With the high winds expected, the National Weather Service in Amarillo has issued a Wind Advisory for Amarillo and points east, as well as a High Wind Warning for areas north of the city. Borger, Dumas, Dalhart, and Perryton are all under the warning and are forecasted to see the strongest wind values. As shown below, the winds are expected to be steady 35-45 miles per hour all day with the highest winds in the northern half of the panhandle. We will likely see winds gusting between 50-60 miles per hour in Amarillo, and gusts up over 70 could happen in an area from Dumas and north.

Behind the front, we can expect high temperatures on Tuesday afternoon in Amarillo to be in the upper 70's. Overnight temperatures will dip into the 50's. Just like over the weekend and on Monday, we will also be keeping a close eye on the wildfire danger. On Monday, the Amarillo area was under a Red Flag Warning. Due to the dry and windy conditions, we could see an elevated fire risk again on Tuesday.
