Rattlesnakes are nothing new to anyone in Amarillo. We're all well aware that rattlesnakes are out there, and most of us do our best to avoid them at all costs. However, try as we might, we still cross paths with the infamous nope-ropes from time to time. There have been multiple reports made recently of rattlesnakes popping up, which has me thinking we could be in for a doozy of a snake season.

Multiple Calls Made To Potter County Sherrif's Office Because Of Rattlesnakes

The Potter County Sherrif's Office took to social media to spread the word that snake sightings are happening a lot right now, and that you'd best watch what you're doing in the great outdoors. According to the post, they received four calls within 24 hours over rattlesnakes. Let's hope it was just to say that one was spotted and no one got hurt.

Rattlesnakes are no joke, and finding one unexpectedly is a terrifying experience. You hear the sound of the rattle and your blood runs cold. You stay perfectly still while your mind races trying to figure out what you're going to do.

What Should You Do If You See A Rattlesnake?

The tips are pretty simple and straightforward. If you hear the sound of a rattlesnake's rattle, freeze. Locate the snake before taking another step. Remain calm and try to put plenty of space between you and the snake.

Don't try throwing stuff at it. I figured this would be a good idea, however there's a chance it's going to move toward you instead of away from you. It's best to not agitate the thing further. You also need to keep children and pets away from the area where the snake is located.

When it comes to keeping them out of your yard, the best tip is to try and limit the number of places for the snake to hide. Don't leave things piled up. Those piles of wood, junk, or whatever provide a nice place for the snake to call home. Also, don't get rid of the harmless varieties of snakes. Supposedly, rattlesnakes aren't keen to move in and take over your yard if there's something already there. I had no idea.

Be safe while you're out and about this summer. Keep an eye out for rattlesnakes in the yard or while you're out on a hike.
