One of the better parts of living in Texas is that there is a variety of places to go and plenty of stuff to do once you get there. This state is crawling with excursions packed with everything from massive natural wonders to bright big city lights. We've got it all in the Lone Star State. The only question is, how long should you save up before you head out on the road in Texas?

If you're just wanting to camp, I know places where you can bed down for free and see some of the most beautiful sunsets you can imagine. Wash that down with an unobstructed view of the stars and you have a beautiful getaway that most budgets can handle. If you're wanting the glamour of something more "big city," you'll need to save up more.

According to a study that was done recently by GET, Texans are the best when it comes to budgeting for travel.

For A Short Trip In Texas, You'll Probably Save Around $700

According to the information in the survey, Texans on average will sock away $371.98 per month when planning a trip. For a short trip that lasts a few days, Texans will save for 1 month, 2 weeks, and 5 days on average. If you're planning a trip that lasts longer, you will of course need to save longer.

On average, Texans who are taking a longer trip will save for 8 months, 3 weeks, and 6 days before hitting the road. That's going to put you in the neighborhood of $3,500 to close to $4,000 for your trip. That's not bad.

Trips On A Budget In Texas

To get the biggest bang for your buck, or just spend fewer of them, I have a few hacks I like to use to save when on the road.

• Sleep for free where you can (do a lot of camping and find free camping areas or low-cost sites)
• Pack your food and make eating out a special part of the trip (I went to Colorado and only ate out once. Saved a ton of dough, so to speak.)
• Make a budget for souvenirs or other incidentals you might want to purchase...and stick to it!
