What You Need To Know About Walmart Scam Hitting The Texas Panhandle
Another day, another scam in the Texas panhandle. This time, the scammers are stepping up their game by using a name that all of us are familiar with. It's a store that a lot of us visit multiple times a month. Scammers are now trying to lure you in using Walmart. If you've seen this letter in Canyon, Texas, it's a scam.
Scam In Canyon, Texas Involves Gift Cards And Walmart
The Canyon Police Department shared a photo of a letter that was recently received by individuals in Canyon that asks them to be a part of an evaluation at the local Walmart. The letter promises compensation for participating, and it's an amount of money that any of us would love to have in the bank.
The letter promises compensation of around $450 for purchasing $1,500 worth of Apple gift cards. There's even a cashier's check included that you can deposit in the bank to complete your task. If you complete the task within 48 hours, you get a bonus of $200. Not bad for a day's work.
Unfortunately, if it sounds too good to be true...well, you know the rest.
The Greatest Gathering Of Red Flags In Your Mailbox
First, the cashier's check is a fake. That's a real bummer, but it shouldn't be surprising. No one is going to send a check for that amount of money to a random stranger expecting them to do anything other than put it in their bank and let it sit.
Second, the entire letter is written in such a way that the only reasonable reaction to reading it is to wonder what it is that you just read. It barely makes sense, and there are some parts of it that are comedically wonderful. For instance, as part of your assignment, you'll need to critique certain aspects of the store. I don't know about you, but I'm not sure what the state of the restroom has to do with buying gift cards. The entire thing gets stranger with every passing sentence.
As you can see in the post from Canyon Police Department above if you are ever sent a check and then told to purchase gift cards, you're encouraged to reach out to law enforcement to see if the offer is legit. The winning bet is usually that it's a scam. If you live in any of the towns near Canyon, Texas, keep an eye on your mailbox.
