UPDATE: This Saturday's camp is full, but there are several more this summer listed below.

One of the things that every kid in the Amarillo area should do is learn how to fish. It can be one of the most rewarding activities that they can accomplish. It seems to be one of those things that teaches kids the joy of being out in nature.

It also teaches them to enjoy the quiet and to put down those phones. They need less screen time, we know that, and fishing can be one of those things that just brings peace. Heck, if they can catch something, it can also bring them some food, which is the ultimate reward.

I used to love to fish. There is something about being in the outdoors and just taking it all in while you are waiting for a bite that can be so enjoyable. Not all kids take advantage of our local waters, but they definitely should.

What to Expect: Free Gear, Expert Advice, and Conservation

Maybe it's because they don't have a pole or just know the basics of fishing. You can change that by signing them up for an upcoming Amarillo Parks and Recreation camp.

There's still space in our free fishing camp this Saturday!

Children below the age of 17 can join us at John Ward Memorial Park May 9th at 8am for free with supplies provided to learn about conservation, hear from local fishery experts, and even take home a fishing pole!

This is an event that you need to have them registered for, but they will learn the basics and leave with a fishing pole. They will learn about conservation and hear from local fishery experts.

The 2026 Schedule: Four Dates for Free Fishing Fun

  • June 20th: Martin Road Complex
