One of the strangest things happened to me while I was shopping at a store here in Amarillo this weekend. The wife and I went into a grocery store (which shall remain nameless) and we had our 2 year old daughter with us.

We grabbed some things we needed for dinner, then decided to get some adult beverages since it was absolutely gorgeous outside. Great time for some drinks on the patio.

We finish grabbing everything we need, then head to the checkout. I'm one of those weirdos who absolutely loves self-checkout. It's just easier when there's a free spot open and I don't have a ton of things.

So we start scanning everything, then we get to the alcohol. Scan that and wait for the attendant to come check my ID. He comes over, I show it to him then he looks at my wife.

"I need to see yours as well". Well, she didn't bring it with her because I was driving and she had no reason to bring anything with her. We tell the attendant she doesn't have it, but it shouldn't matter as I'm the one making the purchase.

He points to a sign that mentions anyone looking under 40 must have an ID when alcohol is being purchased. As he points to it, he says, "the sign says everyone must have an ID, even her," as he points to my two year old.

I looked at him and said, "seriously? A two year old?" He shakes his head yes. This has to be the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen or experienced when purchasing alcohol. I look at my wife and tell her to just take the baby and go to the car.

At that point, I turn to the attendant and ask if that's better. He says he'll let it go this time, but next time anyone at the register must have an ID and be of age.

Is this a new thing? Like I know kids aren't supposed to go inside liquor stores and all that, but I've purchased beer and whatnot many times with one of my boys standing right next to me at the store. I've never encountered something like this before.

Is this about to become the new norm in Amarillo? I sincerely hope not.
