West Plains Makes School History With Regional Baseball Title
School is out, yet school is still in session for several schools around Texas. Amarillo has one of those schools still in session, but not the way you think. It's baseball season, and it's the one sport that can run past the school year for a few schools across the state.
This year, Amarillo gets a chance to have a reason to cheer after the school year, as the West Plains varsity team has decided they weren't quite done playing ball. Loaded with seniors who've already walked the stage and received their diploma will have a chance to bring something home that hasn't been achieved before.
West Plains Wins Region
The Wolves found themselves in a small hole down 1-0 in their best-of-three series against Mineral Wells after falling 2-1 in 10 innings on Friday. They knew going in, they didn't have any margin for error and would have to win back-to-back games to bring home the first regional trophy in school history for baseball.
They did just that. The pitching showed up in a major way and didn't allow Mineral Wells to score a run for the final 13 innings they played against each other, coming away with 3-1 and 7-0 victories to call themselves Region I-4A champs and work their way into the semifinals of the state tourney.
What's Next For The Wolves
Two more series, hopefully. That would net them a championship to bring back to Amarillo. West Plains has been no stranger to the final four in its short history as a school. Football and basketball have both been there, but were unable to seal the deal. Baseball will now take its shot at it and see if it can't become the first one to break through.
The Wolves will take on a stout Pleasant Grove team that went 36-4 on the season. The best-of-three series will kick off Thursday at 4 pm at Riders Field in Frisco. The winner of the series will have the chance to play for a state championship against the winner of the Bullard-Calallen series.
