Back in the day I-40 and Grand essentially was the end of Amarillo on the Eastside. In 1984 one of the largest retailers in business bought the land at 3510 E. I-40.
Currently, Big Lots and Ross Dress for Less call this area home.
Ross Dress for Less opened their store at 3510 E. I-40 on July 16, 2022. Big Lots has been at this location since before 2007.
Before Ross, Bealls occupied this building until they closed all their stores in Amarillo in early 2020.
In the mid-80s a new store opened that would eventually change the face of retail forever.
Walmart
Walmart purchased the land in 1984 and opened a store in this location in January 1986. Now this wasn't the Walmart we all know today. This Walmart offered clothing, health and beauty, and home items. The Walmarts of yesteryear did not have groceries. They did have food items, but not a full grocery store.
Walmart remained in this location until the new Walmart Supercenter which included a full grocery section, was opened across Grand Street changing the face of I-40 and Grand. Walmart sold this land in 1997.
Although some may remember this particular Walmart, many won't ever remember Walmart before the giant stores that have everything. Amarillo is full of the ghosts of stores that once were, but it is always great to reminisce.
