Popular Amarillo Restaurant Faces Uncertain Future—Is This the End?
With the rapid closing of many businesses in the area and the state of the economy, some things don't surprise us anymore.
Back in September, an Amarillo Restaurant put the business on the market. It was for sale.
Sumo Japanese Restaurant
Sumo first opened in Amarillo at the end of 2020 offering Amarillo residents another great place to enjoy Japanese fare. The owners Jeremy Green and Puntita Panyadee brought their love for sushi and Japanese food.
In October 2023, the restaurant announced new owners, Stephan & Tawni Coleman, and Jeff & Caitlin Story.
For Sale?
In September 2024, a real estate listing was posted showing that the restaurant was for sale. This sale was for the restaurant and required the new owner to take over the lease of the building.

Unfortunately, on Thursday, December 5th, a Facebook user posted a picture of a lockout notice on the door of Sumo.
Looking at their restaurant's Facebook page their last post was November 30th.
This seems to be the writing on the wall for this restaurant, first the real estate listing and then the lockout notice. We did reach out to the restaurant but at the time of publishing, we had yet to receive a response.
However, after Googling the restaurant, their listing shows them as permanently closed.
This wasn't the first Asian food restaurant to call this location home. The King and I was in the space before Sumo opened and served Amarillo residents for decades after finally closing in 2016. After that, a restaurant called Tacos and Tequilas opened. We'll have to wait to see the future of this location.
