Skellytown isn't a place you hear brought up a lot in conversation nowadays. However, this tiny rural Texas panhandle town has an interesting history.

Recently, I stumbled across this video tour of the "abandoned" Skellytown School.

The Abandoned School Isn't That Abandoned, Neither Is Skellytown

Skellytown may be small, but I wouldn't call it abandoned. There's still people holding it down in Skellytown. The school isn't that abandoned either.

It's somewhat taken care of. You can see it in this video. The author even mentions that the city keeps it up.

So it's not completely abandoned. It just doesn't play the role of school house anymore.

Skellytown isn't a ghost town by any stretch of the imagination. The City of Skellytown has an active Facebook page that I absolutely love.

There was a rattlesnake sighted yesterday, and for the love of God stop dumping your limbs in the alley.

The School Has Been Closed For Around 20 Years

The interesting part, to me at least, is that this isn't a case of a school that has been lost to history since the mid 1900s. The school closed relatively recently, in the grand cosmic scheme of things.

You can tell when you watch the video. There's still stuff scribbled on the blackboards. If you catch it at the right time, it looks like some of the basketballs still have air in them.

That doesn't mean that there aren't areas that have seen some damage. Mother Nature has done a number on some areas of the school.

The video is a great watch, and the comments are even better. There are several alumni of that school who commented with stories of what life was like going to the "abandoned" Skellytown School.

The Derelict Beauty of Amarillo's Abandoned Buildings

What is it about abandoned buildings tempts our imagination? Perhaps it's the fact that all of these places were once alive at one point of time. All of these buildings were once a part of everyday life.

But as they are now, they are empty and barren. All we have left of these abandoned properties in Amarillo are memories left to the echoes of time.

The Abandoned School House Outside of Canyon, Texas

This was once the Jowell School. Built in 1901, the building was the cornerstone of the teeny tiny farming community of Jowell.

The building had been rebuilt and restored in the late '80s or 90s before vandals destroyed it in an act of arson. What remains of the Jowell School sits in a desolate part of rolling farmland between the small towns of Canyon and Happy, Texas.

The Abandoned Herring Hotel in Amarillo, Texas

You may have passed it a million times while driving downtown, or you may be new to town. Either way, chances are you've seen the beautiful Herring Hotel. The beautiful aging brick tower sits unoccupied on 3rd and Pearce streets. It's a grand building that stands as a reminder of Amarillo's early days as a cattle and oil town and it tells the stories well.
