Texas Gas Prices Keep Rising as Diesel Hitting Record Highs
Another week, and gas prices are still high and are still on the rise.
However, the ones that are feeling the biggest crunch from the high gas prices are the diesel drivers. That includes many of our truckers out there on the road. AAA Texas shares that the average price per gallon of diesel in Texas is $5.93. The highest diesel price ever was recorded last week on September 19, 2026, at $5.97 per gallon. Ouch!
Why is Diesel so High?
According to Patrick De Haan with GasBuddy, oil is at $95 per barrel; that barrel holds 42 gallons, and each gallon costs about $2.26. Diesel (national average) is $6.50 per gallon. So $4 of every gallon of diesel has nothing to do with the price of oil. That cost comes from how hard it is right now to turn oil into diesel.
What's Driving the Price Gap
Think of a barrel of oil like a steer. One steer gives you a lot of ground beef, but only so much brisket. If everyone suddenly wants brisket, brisket prices soar, even though cattle prices haven’t moved and ground beef is sitting in the cooler at a normal price. A barrel of oil works in basically the same way.

Texans need to prepare for gas prices to stay high. Unfortunately, the price of diesel is tied to everything. Truckers deliver goods, and if they have to pay these outrageous diesel prices, the cost will be passed on to the consumer. Brace yourself because the cost of everything is going to rise.
