Thomas Rhett's wife Lauren improvised in the best way during his performance of "Life Changes" at the 2018 CMA Awards.

Rhett brought his current hit to the awards show stage for a blowout performance where he turned Bridgestone Arena into his own personal book of memories. He began the performance inside a makeshift college bedroom that featured a poster of his hit songwriting father Rhett Akins hanging on the wall.

He then took himself out into the crowd, moving throughout the lower half of the arena with a high school band and full horn section in tow. But the most adorable moment came when he passed by his wife Lauren, who planted a kiss on his cheek, prompting Rhett to let out a small squeal of excitement. Apparently, the impromptu moment threw the singer off his game.

"I missed an entire line of that song," he shares. "Before the performance she said 'Please do not do anything next to me, because I will not be able to handle it.'"

However, the CMAs were hoping he would find a way to incorporate her into the performance of the song, as it references a series of important changes in his life, including their marriage.

"And so I lean in next to her and she kissed me on the cheek and I kind of lost it, so there goes that line," he smiles. "But it was fun, we had a blast playing."

The superstar singer invited the marching band at Ravenwood High School just outside of Nashville to participate in the performance.

"Life Changes" is Rhett's latest No. 1 in a string of chart-topping hits. It serves as the title track of his platinum selling 2017 album that was nominated for Album of the Year. Although Rhett didn't win that particular award, he did not go home empty-handed, taking the prize for Music Video of the Year for "Marry Me."
