New TxDOT Traffic Light at FM 2219 and VFW Goes Live

Tired of getting stuck at the 4-way stop at FM 2219 and VFW/FM 2590 between Amarillo and Canyon? That's all about to change. If you have ever driven this area, then you know what kind of nightmare that intersection can be, especially when it is busy.

A New Traffic Light for FM 2219 and VFW

My husband works off of FM 2219, and sometimes you can get stuck at that 4-way stop for way longer than it should take. Since that area has grown so much, traffic is insane on a lot of that stretch. The Texas Department of Transportation has been doing a good job of upgrading the road. They have put traffic lights at Hunsley Road and at Country Club Drive in Canyon, and now it's time for FM 2219 and VFW.

When Will the FM 2219 Signal Be Fully Working?

I reached out to Jason Britsch, PIO of the Texas Department of Transportation Amarillo District, to find out when the lights would be fully functioning. He said that the signal lights should be flashing today, Thursday, August 6, to help drivers get used to seeing them.

They are expecting to have them fully operating by the end of this week or early next week.

The addition of this light will make that area safer and should push traffic through during those busier hours, like mornings and the drive home. With school starting, it might make the morning commute more pleasant.

What's Next for VFW/FM 2590's Traffic Signal Project?

The next light scheduled to be placed will be at FM 2590 and McCormick Road.

Timeline for the FM 2219 Road Project

Construction on this project began in December 2024. They are slowly but surely getting the upgrades put in, making this stretch of travel safer for residents. The project is expected to be finished in early 2027.
