Construction Chaos: Canyon Commutes Just Became a Bigger Nightmare
The one thing that is constant in cities across the country is construction. No matter where you travel you will find construction. Construction is a way to make our travel better however it makes our lives miserable while the construction is going on.
It was announced in April that construction would start on I-27 between Amarillo to widen the interstate to three lanes. Currently, the stretch of interstate that was once 75 mph is down to 60 mph. This is a safe choice because of the construction. This project is expected to be finished in 2028.

The construction is annoying and let's face it that overpass is very unnerving at the moment. Those who don't want to travel that route have chosen alternate roads. One of those alternate routes is VFW/Soncy/FM 2590 which has different names. That route has been congested but a great alternative.
The Bad - Traveling Between Amarillo and Canyon will be a Bigger Nightmare
Construction has begun on VFW/Soncy/FM 2590. Yep, they decided to throw more construction down while another major project on the way to Canyon was happening. Construction will be from Loop 335 in Amarillo all the way to Highway 60 in Canyon.
The Good - Traveling VFW/Soncy/FM 2590 Will Be Safer When Finished
The purpose of the construction is to make VFW/Soncy/FM 2590 safer. The project includes new traffic lights at Country Club Road, Hunsley Road, Lair Road (better known as 2219), and McCormick. Road crews will also be installing right and left-turn lanes in these areas as well. During the construction, the drainage and overlays will also be updated.
Most of the intersections mentioned above are dangerous, and it is difficult to enter the road. Let's face it: the 4-way stop at VFW and 2219 isn't working. People do not know how to properly use a 4-way Stop, and during busy times, it backs up.
This project is expected to be finished in early 2027 and is estimated to cost $28 million.
If you are looking for an alternate route between Amarillo and Canyon, there is always Washington/FM 1541/Marshall Formby Memorial Highway.
Why do we have so many names for roads in this area?
However, it's only a matter of time before they decide to start construction on that route.
