Why Do Women’s Clothes Keep Lying to Us? A Texas Woman’s Rant
I have to take a few minutes and vent, and please bear with me. Can we chat about women's clothing for a few minutes and why they have to fake everything on them?
I am not a fashionista and never claimed to be, but I love a really pretty shirt or a great-fitting pair of jeans. If I see something cute and it is within my budget, I will grab it and bring it home.
However, why does women's clothing have to be so deceitful? Yes, I said deceitful because it is, women’s clothing literally lies.
Why Fake Pockets?
Why is it that on so many women's bottoms, pants, jeans, shorts, skirts, etc., companies feel the need to fake pockets? Why do they take the extra time to stitch something that looks like a pocket, or even sew a pocket together? And sometimes they go the extra mile and add real pockets, just big enough to hold a single tube of lip balm and your disappointment.
It's frustrating and not cool.
Why Do Women’s Pants Have Fake Pockets?
A quick Google search found that clothing manufacturers fake pockets because
- Cost-effective: no pockets, costs less to make the product.
- The extra fabric for pockets messes with the silhouette of the fabric and looks lumpy
- Women carry purses, so they don't need pockets
The fake pocket thing isn't a new trend, but it’s getting worse.

I had an even bigger moment of frustration the other day when I put on a brand new pair of capris. I purchased a pair of denim capris from a well-known women's clothing store. I shop here a lot and I know if I grab a pair of jeans or capris in my size from this place, they will fit. I went in and found a cute pair of capris, and purchased them without trying them on because again, I know their clothes.
A few days later, I pull these new capris out of my closet and go to put them on, and realize they have faked the zipper. THEY FAKED THE ZIPPER. They stitched the denim to look like it had a zipper flap, but it’s completely non-functional. So, unless you tried them on or looked at them closely, you wouldn't have known that the zipper wasn't there.
Are Fake Zippers the New Trend?
I have hips, I need a zipper. I need that extra room to pull the denim over those baby-making hips, then zip up to a perfect fit.
Why would they fake a zipper? Are zippers suddenly luxury items? Have the prices on these tiny metal pulls skyrocketed?
Designers, if you're going to fake pockets and zippers, fine, but for the love of GOD, slap a warning on the tag.
The Real Cost of Not Trying Clothes On
Yes, I realize that in the future, I should try on all my clothes before buying. I'm stuck with a zipperless pair of capris that looks like it has a zipper. I will have to wiggle and jiggle to get them over my hips. Oh, and heaven help me if I really need to go to the bathroom. I guess this is the price I pay for not heading to the fitting room.

It was the right size, but women's clothing sizes are a rant for another day. A 6 isn't always a 6, and an 18 isn't always an 18.
