Shirley Hall Suddenly Closes at WTAMU in Canyon, Texas
West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas cannot seem to catch a break with on-campus buildings lately. Not long after announcing that the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum would be closing indefinitely, another announcement revealed another somewhat historical building would be closing.
WTAMU Announces the Closure of Shirley Hall
Shirley Hall was established and opened on the WTAMU campus in 1964. This dorm has been housing students for 61 years. WTAMU announced on Thursday, April 10th that the dorm was shut down due to a water main break. Over 137 students had to be relocated from Shirley Hall to other dorms across the university and would remain in these newly assigned dorms for the rest of the semester. They will have through Sunday, April 13th to move into their new dorms, and help will be provided if needed.
Unfortunately, the water line broke on April 9th and flooded the dorm's mechanical room with several feet of water. Many electrical panels were damaged as a result.
Will WT's Shirley Hall Be Closed Indefinitely?
“We are still determining the extent of the damage,” said Weslee Green, assistant vice president for facilities and construction. “Fortunately, we’ve seen no water damage beyond the basement.”

As someone who once resided in Shirley Hall, was a really great dorm because it was centrally located on the campus, near the cafeteria, it had an open courtyard and a large common area, and the units were set up uniquely. It was a great place to meet new friends while experiencing college dorm life. Sadly, this incident happened and hopefully, that does not mean the end for Shirley Hall.
