Pet lovers know that our furry little friend are part of our family.  They are just as costly as our children and now, they may come with an extra charge.

It is often suggested we spay or neuter our pets.  Well there may soon be another cost connected to your fur baby.  On Monday the Amarillo Animal Management and Welfare Board okay-ed a proposed ordinance requiring pets to be registered once a year with proof of a rabies vaccination. Nothing has been passed yet, but the ordinance has been sent to the city council for consideration.

The whole reasoning behind it is to 'reunite owners with their pets.'  It will also help the city to keep track of the number of pets there are in the city.  Right now, there is no way of knowing how many are out there.

When you register your pets, you will receive one tag.  One side will be the rabies side and the other side will be the registration side.  The proposed cost will be $15.  There will be lots of incentives if it is passed.  If your pet is neutered, you will only pay half the cost.  If your best friend is microchipped, you will get $2 off.

Some think it will help weed out the irresponsible pet owners.  Others think it is only punishing the responsible pet owners.  We will now have to see what the city council thinks.
