Amarillo seems to be the construction capital of Texas, with orange cones on every major street in the city and in between. Construction is supposed to be helpful and make driving better, but to get to "the better" part, drivers face nightmare driving.

After going around town the last few days..have come to the conclusion that Amarillo has a 'project' going on every single road in town! - Marcia C.

That comment couldn't be more correct. It seems construction is happening on every street in town. It isn't stopping.

Last week we shared that a major intersection, 45th and Bell, would be temporarily turned into a 4-way stop to fix the signal light; the project was supposed to be done on Friday, but TxDOT extended work through today, June 8. However, the 4-way stop situation doesn't stop with 45th and Bell. If you travel north of I-40 on Western, you need to prepare yourself.

What's Happening at Plains and Western

The Plains and Western intersection will temporarily become a 4-way stop for signal repairs. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, they will be performing signal work starting today, June 8, and the work is expected to be finished by the end of the week. If you travel this area and are in a hurry, it might be helpful to find an alternate route because it will take longer for traffic to get through.

4-Way Stop Rules Every Amarillo Driver Should Know

  • Stop All the Way: A rolling stop doesn't count. Come to a complete stop before proceeding.
  • First to Stop, First to Go: Whoever arrives at the intersection first has the right of way.
  • Tie? Go Right: When two vehicles stop at the same time, yield to the driver on your right.
  • Straight Beats Left: Turning left? Wait for oncoming traffic going straight to clear first.
  • Pedestrians Have Priority: Anyone on foot crosses before any vehicle moves.
