Don’t Miss It: Winter-Storm Spotter Training for Amarillo Residents
The thing about Amarillo and the Texas Panhandle is you never know when the weather might change. It could be 70 degrees one day and in a few hours, blowing snow.
Weather is fascinating, and learning to spot changes is something anyone can do.
Why Winter Spotting Matters in the Texas Panhandle
The National Weather Service in Amarillo has several classes during the year to learn about weather and what to look for. For most people, it's during tornado and storm season. Storm-chasing has long been considered both a fascination and an art.
Winter weather can be just as exciting to track, which is why they offer a special class on spotting winter storms.

What the SKYWARN Winter Class Covers
The SKYWARN Winter spotter training class is taking place on Thursday, December 11th. In the winter spotter training class, you will learn:
- Types of winter precipitation that fall in the Texas Panhandle
- Criteria for various winter precipitation and cold weather watches and warnings
- Past winter weather events
- Winter and cold weather safety
