The Suspect in Sunday’s Deadly Shooting in Austin Has Been Caught
The man believed responsible for gunning down three people in Austin Sunday has been arrested in Manor.
The Manor Police Department reported late Monday morning that Stephen Nicholas Broderick was arrested while walking along Old Kimbro Road.
According to a news release from Manor PD, the Travis County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to the 123000 block of Old Kimbro Rd. around 6:53 AM Monday in response to a call about a suspicious person.
Two callers reported seeing a man fitting Broderick's description walking south along the road wearing a black shirt and dark jeans.
When Manor Police Department officers got to the scene, they conducted what was described as a "high risk stop", positively identified the man as Broderick, and took him into custody at 7:05 AM.
Police say Broderick complied with officers' demands and didn't give them any trouble. A loaded pistol was reportedly found in the waist band of his pants. He was taken to the Travis County Jail. Records show he was booked at 9:35 AM. As of late Monday morning, no charges had been listed and no bond information was available.
Police say Broderick fatally shot three people in northwest Austin shortly before Noon Sunday. KXAN reports that one of the victims may have been Broderick's mother, while the other two were students and Elgin High School.
Broderick is a former detective with the Travis County Sheriff's Office who resigned in June of 2020 after being arrested and charged with sexual assault of a child.
Sunday's shooting was initially reported as an active shooter situation, but police quickly clarified that it was an isolated domestic incident. Police have not yet said what may have motivated the shooting.
