One of the biggest issues Amarillo has faced over the years has been drug busts and trafficking. For whatever reason, it seems to be a hub for drugs to land and be distributed through. We aren't particularly close to the Mexico border, but it's almost like we're some safe haven.

There doesn't seem to be a day that goes by in Amarillo without a drug arrest of some sort, and every couple of weeks there seems to be a bigger operation that is broken up in the city.

One of the bigger ones in recent memory just took place in Amarillo as 13 alleged drug traffickers were arrested on multiple charges.

The arrests came last week and the defendants are now facing a 15-count indictment for what authorities found. A couple of those charges include conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute controlled substances.

Authorities found an amount of drugs I don't think has been found in Amarillo in quite some time, and this one has to rank with some of the bigger busts that have taken place.

Seized at the scene were approximately 70 kilograms of methamphetamine, four kilograms of cocaine, two kilos of fentanyl, eight firearms, and $70,000 in different assets.

When you break that down, that's a touch over 167 POUNDS of drugs they found at the scene.

The suspects are now awaiting their day in court to answer to the charges they're facing, but it makes you wonder if this was just one piece of a larger operation happening within the city.
