Rabies is very serious and it seems like it has invaded the panhandle.  The city of Perryton has a serious issue and it is coming from a very smelly source.

If you don't know what rabies is, it is a viral disease of the central nervous system that is passed through the bite of a rabid animal or through saliva of a rabid animal.  And Perryton is asking residents to be extra cautious.

At least four cases of rabies from skunks have been confirmed and results from two more are pending.  Police are asking residents to take extra caution and if you see a skunk to call 911 immediately.

Many residents are actually setting up traps in their yards.

The skunks with rabies have been found around the area of the 900 block of 3rd Avenue, along with 24th Avenue and Jackson and at 9th Avenue and Gum Street.  A lot of stray cats are known to be in this area as well.  Officials say that they suspect at least 12-14 more skunks are infected.
