Maybe you or your kids will remember "Book It!" from the 80s and 90s. The idea was that you would read books and get rewarded for it. I ate a lot of tiny pizzas thanks to that reading program.

The Sod Poodles have announced that they are launching their own reading program for students in the area. The aim is promote education and literacy among Amarillo and Canyon students, K-7.

The Sod Poodles Reading Program will work like a baseball game. According to a press release:

For every book a student finishes, they complete an inning. After the first three innings are completed and he/she moves on to innings four through eight, the students earn incentives from program sponsors including Whataburger, Cinergy, McDonald's, Sonic, and Gatti's.

After a student finishes the ninth (final) inning, they receive a free voucher for a Sod Poodles game and are entered in a drawing to win a prize on behalf of Kumon Math and Reading Center of Amarillo.

In case you lost track, that's a lot of prizes from area restaurants and a voucher for a Sod Poodles game.

Ruckus, the team mascot, will be visiting area schools to help launch the program. It runs from March 2 through April 3, according to the press release.

My days of reading for prizes are way behind me, but I feel like those tiny pizzas helped in some way give me a love of reading that I still carry with me. I recently finished John Dies At The End and decided to pick up Fear And Loathing On The Campaign Trail '72, and Griftopia since we're in an election cycle. I'm halfway through both and recommend them if you are looking for a good book or two.
