One of the first cars to have the automatic lock feature when driving was the Mercedes back in the 1980s.  This feature was considered a high luxury.  In the 1990s most of your luxury cars had this feature, it wasn't until the 2000s that this became standard on most vehicles.

Why Do Most Cars Have Locks That Engage When You Drive?

That answer is easy, it's mostly for personal safety.  It's safe to have your car locked while driving because it prevents the doors from flying open in an accident.  It is also a deterrent for carjacking, preventing a child from opening the door while the car is moving.
