Why Texans Are Rethinking Electric Vehicle Purchases
In Texas, on any given road or interstate, you will find it full of pickups. That's normal for Texas. However, over the past decade, and especially in recent years, more electric vehicles (EVs) have appeared on the roads.
There could be many factors for this, including that it was cool to have an electric car at one point in time, it was the cool new toy.

The Growing Presence of EV Charging Stations and Models in Texas
If you travel across the state, you can see the influence of electric vehicles with the addition of charging stations throughout the state and even in small towns.
In the last 4 years, consumers have had over 70 options for an electric vehicle, and almost 60 models of EVs are available in 2025.
Why Don’t Texans Want Electric Cars?
It seems that Texans are losing interest in purchasing electric vehicles. AAA Texas conducted a survey about EVs, and it found that 63% of Texans would be unlikely to purchase an EV, with only 16% saying they would.
Why Are So Many Texans Hesitant to Buy Electric Vehicles?
- Costs:
EVs cost the consumer more to purchase than an average vehicle. The cost to replace a battery for an EV ranges between $4,000 and $19,000. Plus, in Texas, EV owners are subject to a $400 first-time registration fee and a $200 renewal fee each year.
- Travel:
If you are traveling in a regular car and need gas, you can pull over and fill up in less than 10 minutes. When you are traveling and have to charge your EV and are lucky enough to find a fast charger, it can take 20 minutes to an hour to charge your car. Plus, you can only travel 200-300 miles on a full charge.
- Safety
The fear of fire or battery explosion and fire.
- Installation of Home Charger:
The purchase of an EV also requires the installation of a home charger. Some homes' electrical systems cannot handle a car charger, and the costs associated with upgrading that system or providing the proper plugs to install a charger create concerns. Along with adding a charger to your home is finding a proper place to install the charger in your home near your car.
