West Texas A&M Starts its Championship Run Sept. 2nd
Buffs Football is back! and I for one am ready to see the team start chasing the Lone Star Conference Title this year. I know... Maybe we're getting a little ahead of ourselves here.
No.. The more I think about this, The more I want this to happen. last year's season was a crapshoot at best and the schedules just kept getting wonky not only in the lone star conference but across the board in FBS and FCS division play as well. Being new to town and a former longhorn myself, I'm looking at this team with an outside eye. Head Coach Hunter Hughes returns with a 17-16 record and lots to prove but again It's going to be total domination and that conference title will look good in the trophy case
Here's how the season breaks down
Thur. Sept, 2nd: Texas College - Led by former Cowboys DE Greg Ellis, The NAIA School is no laughing matter with a few conference championships under its belt with the last one in 2006
Sat. Sept, 11th: UT Permian Basin - There's nothing fun about opening the conference on the road, WTAMU is making the trip to Ratliff Stadium in Odessa to take on the Falcons who are currently 3-0 in their spring season with QB Clayton Roberts at the helm.
Sat. Sept, 18th: Western New Mexico - The Mustangs have a lot to prove coming off a 2-7 Conference record from 2019 and so far the spring season hasn't been too kind to them
Sat. Sept, 25: Colorado School Of Mines - Another non conference home game for the Buffs. The Orediggers come in signing 22 new players in their 2021 class with a 12-1 record from 2019 and the mindset that the Rocky Mountain Conference is theirs for the taking.
Sat. Oct, 2nd: Western Oregon - Visiting from the Great Northwest conference the wolves were on the schedule last year before getting the season suspended. they finished conference play 7-4 in 2019
Sat. Oct, 9th: Angelo State - Now it's been a minute since the last big win streak of 9 games that ended in 2014, but the Buffs got one last time they saw each other and hope to get a new streak going here.
Sat. Oct, 16th: Eastern New Mexico - Ahh yes Wagon Wheel Time and this year the team takes the trip to Portales. The last win was on the road as well with a 35-14 Nick Gerber 4 touchdown game.
Sat. Oct, 23rd - Texas A&M Commerce - Its been a minute since the Buffs have had the lions figured out. Is this year the Buffs end the 6 game streak?
Sat. Oct, 30th: Texas A&M Kingsville - Hopefully the halloween trip to Javelina Stadium isn't too spooky for the Buffs, Maybe we see a repeat of the 2013 69-7 Victory?
Sat. Nov, 6th: Midwestern State - The Buffs close out conference play against Midwestern State. Last time they saw each other it was WT's Senior Day and Nick Gerber went 13 for 24, 218 yards with 3TD's which was pretty impressive for the redshirt sophomore. Hopefully the Highway 287 Challenge Cup stays right here in Canyon.
Sat. Nov, 13th: Bethel College - The Threshers make the trip from Newton Kansas to close out the season for the Buffs coming in with a 9-0 record from last season with some dominant wins in their conference that almost look like basketball scores
How do you think the team is gonna do this year?
