Amarillo is lucky to have schools like Amarillo College and West Texas A&M University, but students at WT are dealing with a growing issue. If you rely on a scooter or bike to get around WTAMU, you may want to think twice about how you’re leaving it.
Unfortunately, we live in a world where people take what doesn't belong to them.
Scooter Thefts Reported Across WTAMU Campus
Right now, WTAMU is seeing a rash of scooter thefts. The WT University Police Department has received continuous reports of electric scooter thefts all over campus for the last few months. At the time of publication, the most recent report was on March 18, 2026.
Where Scooters Are Being Targeted
Most of these stolen scooters were left unsecured in bike racks near residence halls and classroom buildings. If you live on campus and don't want your scooter stolen, you need to take the appropriate steps to keep it safe. The WTAMU PD offered suggestions on how students can protect their scooters.
How Students Can Protect Their Scooters
- Lock It Up Right - Use a high-quality U-lock or chain lock attached to a fixed object
- Bring It Inside When You Can - Indoor storage is the safest option. Unfortunately, electric scooters are not allowed inside campus buildings.
- Register Your Scooter - Use Operation Lock Out to help recovery if stolen. Contact the UPD for more information.
- Stay Aware - If something feels off, report suspicious activity immediately.

If you are a student on campus and see something suspicious, report it. It all goes back to if you see something, say something. As long as we keep allowing stuff like this to happen, it won't stop.
Back in March 2022, Bird had scooters all over campus and Canyon; however, they soon picked up all the scooters and left.
