It has been a fairly quiet severe weather season around the Texas panhandle up until just recently. Several rounds of heavy storms have hit the Amarillo area in just the past week and more storms remain the forecast. If you are not ready for pending severe weather, now is the time to make sure you stay weather aware.

On Monday night, the Amarillo area saw some of the strongest storms that have rolled through the region in a long time. It was also the first time the City of Amarillo's "Amarillo Alerts Emergency Notification System" has been put to the test of inclement weather events. The new alert system was put in place in April.

“The Amarillo Alerts Emergency Notification System worked flawlessly,” said City of Amarillo Director of Emergency Management Chip Orton. “This is a valuable resource for Amarillo residents, and we encourage residents to use the system for the most timely, accurate and up-to-date information pertaining to public safety.”

The Amarillo Alerts Emergency Notification System alerts residents to information on a variety of public safety topics, including emergency information about severe weather, which occurred Monday. Information is also available on topics such as road closures and missing persons. The system sends messages directly to residents on their choice of contact method – cell phone, SMS, home phone, email, fax, pager, etc.

The system is free and serves residents through the Amarillo area, including Potter and Randall counties. You can sign up at AmarilloAlerts.com and choose the options on how you would like to be notified
