Earthquakes do happen in Amarillo and all over the Texas Panhandle.
Last night, Monday, September 16, at 7:49 pm social media lit up with people from Amarillo, Canyon, Abilene, Memphis, and all over Texas and New Mexico. An earthquake did happen although it wasn't in Amarillo. However, the aftershocks of this earthquake were felt all the way up to Amarillo.
An earthquake occurred in Ackerly, Texas.
It was quite a large earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1. Although this is considered a mild earthquake, it is felt and can cause minor damage.
This earthquake was powerful enough that residents felt it across 3 states.
The earthquake in Ackerly was powerful enough to make the earth move in many other places including Amarillo.
This morning, Tuesday, September 17, at 5:46 am, Ackerly, Texas experienced another earthquake that registered 2.8 on the Richter scale.
When was the last Amarillo earthquake?
Amarillo hasn't had an earthquake since July 15th. This earthquake was northeast of Amarillo and registered 2.1 on the richer scale. According to All Quakes, since 2023 Amarillo has had 15 earthquakes. One of those earthquakes was above a 3 magnitude, 10 earthquakes were between a 2 and 3 and 4 of those earthquakes were below a 2. Most earthquakes under 2 are not usually felt.
If you feel shaking in Amarillo, it could be an earthquake or aftershocks from a nearby city.
