Amarillo’s Quirkiness Continues with the Floating Mesa
Oh, Amarillo you have so much that is just strange. Most of it is thanks to the eccentric Stanley Marsh 3. If you see something weird around Amarillo it was probably something that he came up with. Seriously it is.
Of course, we have the one everyone knows about, The Cadillac Ranch. There are songs about it. You get to take your spray paint out and decorate how you want. That is not all that he has brought to our area.
There are all those weird signs that popped up in people's yards. A lot of people asked to have them removed when his name was brought up in some not-so-favorable stories. These stories have been whispered about for years. You can still see a bunch of his signs around town.
Oh, and don't forget Channel 7's building. If you ever wondered why the lights are on the building like they are. Well, it's because Stanley wanted to make sure if aliens ever landed they wouldn't miss all the lights of KVII. I kid you not.
Then there are the Legs of Amarillo. Which I never really knew was a Stanley Marsh thing. I still don't know how I didn't know that....but here we are.
I remember one of the first times I drove out to Boys Ranch for the rodeo they have every Labor Day weekend. That is when I first saw the Floating Mesa. I was told that it looks pretty cool if you see it in perfect condition. The sky has to be this perfect shade of white. The clouds have to match up with the fence.
If it does then the top looks like it is floating. Why? Why is this something that had money spent on it? I will never know. Though, here we are.
It's just another one of those things that make Amarillo what it is. Whatever that may be.
