David Nail: ‘Depression Is Always in the Back of My Mind’
Since revealing his struggles with depression in early 2014, David Nail has been open about how his depression affects him even during the highest points of his life. When Nail and his wife Catherine revealed in July of 2016 that they were expecting twins, for example, the singer shared how their struggle to conceive was tough to take, and in a tweet on Thursday (April 20), Nail admits that depression still "is always in the back of my mind."
"It doesn't hang around for months at a time like it used to, but it still pops up now and then. It doesn't matter how good your life is going, or what a wonderful family you have," Nail writes. "Someone can hand you a million dollars, and it will smother any joy you feel right into the ground. The more you try and 'look at the bright side,' the worse it makes you feel."
Nail says that "medicine, and therapy" have helped him through his struggles, and he notes that "there are far more good days than bad," but he knows he will always, "for the rest of my life," fight depression.
It's unclear what brought on Nail's introspective tweet, but according to previous messages on the social networking platform, he has recently been in the studio working on a new album.
"It's truly amazing how you think you've written all there is to say about something, and 4/5 years later, it falls out in about 15 minutes!" Nail wrote on Wednesday night (April 19). On Thursday morning, he added, "Didn't think it got more raw and real than with "Fighter," and "I Won't Let You Go." I may have just dove into deeper water!"
Nail recently split from his longtime record label, MCA Nashville. Nail signed with MCA in 2007 and released four studio albums and two EPs while with the label; he also notched seven Top 40 singles while with MCA Nashville, including “Let It Rain” and “Whatever She’s Got,” which both went to No. 1. On Monday (April 17) on Twitter, Nail noted, "Change has brought more time for creative freedom."
Nail has a few tour dates on his calendar, scheduled for throughout the rest of 2017.
