Discover the Texas City Leading in US Credit Card Ownership
When it comes to Texas, you'll find people living the high life, living comfortably, living paycheck to paycheck or in debt up to their ears.
Most people have credit cards and use those credit cards to purchase larger items they don't have the out-of-pocket money for, or they have credit cards to earn the rewards, while others are using their credit cards to make up the gap between paychecks.
That is a slippery, dangerous slope.
According to Experian, the average American has 4 credit cards. While others have more, less or none at all. It's almost shocking to see just how many credit cards some people have in their wallet.
Laredo, Texas is One of the Top 10 Cities in the US with the Most Credit Cards
They are number 8 in the country for the most credit cards. The next closest state in Texas is Brownfield and they come in at number 25. This Wallet Hub study compared different metrics, including the number of credit cards owned and the number of new cards opened.
The amount of credit cards may also correlate to the amount of accounts in collections because Wallet Hub found that Laredo is the #1 city in the country for account collections.
The city with the most credit cards in the US is Winston-Salem, NC. On the opposite end is Juneau, AK.

Owning credit cards is one thing, but credit card debt is another. In 2024, the US ended with $1.21 trillion in credit card debt. The average credit card debt in Texas is $12,485.
Credit cards can be helpful when managed correctly, but unfortunately, more and more people find themselves drowning in credit card debt. It's a long hard road to get out of that kind of debt. A tool that is supposed to help with finances can hinder them.
