The relief Texas was feeling at the pump the last few weeks has just ended.  The gas price drop slammed to a stop, like a car skidding to avoid something in the road. They went from dropping to shooting up sharply in a single week.

How Texas Gas Prices Compare to the National Average

This week, according to AAA Texas, Texans are paying $3.85 for a gallon of regular gas. That is 25 cents more than drivers were paying last week. Last year at this time, Texans were paying $1.09 less. Luckily, Texas is below the national average, which is $4.30 per gallon, and that jumped 27 cents from last week.

Lubbock beat out Amarillo for the cheapest gas in the Lone Star State by a penny. El Paso is still paying the highest prices in the state.

Why Gas Prices Are Surging Again

We have reached the highest gas price since 2022. Crude oil is over $100 per barrel. At the time of writing, Brent crude is at $110, while WTI is at $104 per barrel according to Oilprice.com. Prices fluctuate often.

Because crude oil is the main driver of gasoline prices, continued volatility in the global oil market could keep upward pressure on pump prices in the days ahead,  said Daniel Armbruster, spokesperson for AAA Texas

The price surge is being driven largely by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and ongoing uncertainty about when it will reopen.

This price surge looks like it is going to be a bumpy ride for Texas drivers. Let's hope most Texas cities don't join El Paso and break the $4 mark.
