The oldest high school rivalry in Amarillo football game is tonight
Amarillo's 66 year old rivalry in district 2-5A division 1 kicks off tonight at Dick Bivins Stadium. As the 6-2 Amarillo High Sandies take on the 5-2 Palo Duro Dons.
Amarillo High Sandies
This game tonight is a big one for the sandies as we get closer to the playoff season. If they win tonight and the 7-1 Tascosa Rebels lose to the 3-4 Monterey Plainsmen then the sandies will be tied with the rebels for the number 1 playoff spot. The keys for them to win this game is to not gas out so fast. I say this because of last week game against Coronado yes the sandies won the game but Coronado did score 14 unanswered points in the 4th quarter making the final score 34-27. If they can ease off the gas just a little bit saving some for the 4th quarter then they should be able to win the game.
Palo Duro Dons
This game is also a big one for the dons tonight due to the playoffs being right around the corner. If the dons win the game tonight against the sandies and the 2-6 Caprock Longhorns can beat the 3-4 Coronado Mustangs then the dons will move up from 5th place to be tied for 3rd place in the playoff picture with Coronado. The keys for the dons to win tonight is to get back to how they were playing at the beginning of the season. I say this because up until the dons played Tascosa they were winning every game on average by 21 points. If they can get back to playing like that then the dons should win this game.
This rivalry between the sandies and the dons dates back to 1955 and the last time the dons beat the sandies was in 2003 when Ziggy Hood was a junior on the team. This game is going to come down to who ever takes my advice first. Either way this game is big for both teams and should be a high action game to watch.
