Just in time for the hustle and bustle of Thanksgiving, our weather in the Texas panhandle is about to make a major change. The short week will start off pretty nice on Monday, but our first weather maker is going to roar into the area for Tuesday. A strong cold front will bring west winds upwards of 30 mph with gusts over 50 mph possible. We will go from the upper 50s / low 60s on Monday, to Tuesday afternoon highs only in the upper 40s to low 50s. Factor the cooler temps with the winds, and wind chill values will hover in the 30s for most of the day. Tuesday will also be a day where the fire danger will be high with the windy and dry conditions. Take your usual precautions when we see an enhanced fire danger.

On Wednesday, things will take a wintry turn across the panhandle. Even though it is dubbed one of the biggest travel days of the year, mother nature has her eyes set on bringing us another round of possible ice, rain, and snow mix. It is still too early to tell what exactly is in store for Amarillo, but if the storm tracks further north or south, that will determine if we see more snow, or more of a wintry mix. The timing for this will be later in the day on Wednesday and overnight into Thanksgiving morning.

On Thanksgiving, the wintry weather could remain in place for the first half of the day before changing over to a cold rain for the afternoon. Look for highs on Thanksgiving Day to only be in the 30s. For Black Friday shopping, we will see a much nicer day with highs nearing 60 degrees. An isolated shower or even thunderstorm will be possible on Friday.

If you plan on traveling this week, make sure you are prepared for the cold weather and possible winter weather. If you are going by car, have supplies in case you get stuck or need to be parked for a while.
