Amarillo Man Charged for the Death of 5 People in Drunk Driving Incident
The Amarillo Police Department has announced that a man has been charged in the death of 5 people.
Larry Rolen was arrested and booked into the Potter County Jail. He was charged with four counts of intoxicated manslaughter. He was also charged with one count of intoxicated assualt. This charge was brought on before the fifth victim died from injuries caused by the accident. New charges are pending.
The incident happened on Wednesday, December 22nd. A Nissan Altima was going westbound on St. Francis. The Nissan was hit head on by a Chevrolet 2500 pickup driven by Rolen. He had been traveling eastbound in the Westbound lanes. There were 5 people in the Nissan at the time of the crash. Four of the occupants died at the scene, the fifth succumbed to her injuries on Friday, December 24th.
The victims in the crash were 23-year-old Andrea Aguirre, 46-year-old Angelica Colin, 88-year-old Raul Colin, 85-year-old Teresa Colin, and 35-year-old Raul Perez Colin. The family had been out looking at Christmas Lights.
This family was needlessly destroyed due to the actions of one man. As you are making plans for your New Year's Eve celebrations, please make sure you have a plan. Choose a designated driver, plan to stay at the place you are at, or call an Uber, Lyft or taxi. No one should die because someone chose to drink and drive.
According to TxDOT, Amarillo saw 414 DUI crashes in 2020. Those crashes resulted in 17 fatalities and 46 injuries. Four of those crashes took place during the NYE holiday. In Texas drunk driving claims a life every 9 hours on Texas Roads. Last year 963 people died from drunk driving in Texas.
