Evening Fire Engulfs Home in Amarillo, One Dead
The Amarillo Fire Department was called out last night to a house fire.
The home was located near 34th and Hancock. Once on the scene the Amarillo Fire Department found fire from the roof and in the main living area of the house. They were able to gain entry by the front door, where they found a victim. They were able to move the victim out of the house where the AMS took over life saving measures.
Firefighters tried to re-enter the house, but due to the fire conditions in the attic the AFD were forced out of the house. They were able to cut a hole through the garage and worked on extinguishing the fire. They were also able to use the extension ladder to the roof to extinguish the fire in the attic.
The victim, 84-year-old female, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Fire Marshall's office has ruled the cause of this fire as undetermined.
Although the AFD and AMS did all they could to save the life of this woman and her home. This is a reminder to myself and hopefully to you, to check on your elderly neighbors. If you don't know them, it's now a good time to get to know them. Even though they may have family to look after them, they aren't always going to be around in times of emergent need. By befriending you elderly neighbors, you are another watchful eye, when something like this tragedy happens.
I would hope that any of us would step up and step in to help, when something like this occurs.
