Illness Sparks Recall of Ground Beef Nationwide Due to Possible E. Coli Contamination
Not long after a recall of organic carrots due to possible E coli contamination, another recall has been announced on ground beef.
Ground Beef Recall
The FDA announced that Wolverine Packing Co. in Detroit, Michigan is recalling 167,277 pounds of ground beef products. They believe that the products may be contaminated with E. coli.
Has Sickness been Reported?
The problem was found after the Minnesota Department of Agriculture notified the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) on November 13, 2024, after a group of people reported illness after consuming ground beef. It was tracked down to these ground beef products.
The recalled products have a use-by date of 11/14/2024 and they bear the establishment number "EST. 2574B" in the USDA mark of inspection. These products were distributed to restaurants throughout the United States.
The full product list can be found here, and pictures of the labels can be found here.
Where Could the Ground Beef Products Be Found?
The FSIS believes that these products may be in the refrigerators and freezers of restaurants nationwide. Restaurants are encouraged to check their stock and either discard any contaminated products immediately or return them to the place of purchase.
If you believe you could have consumed any of these products and feel ill contact your health professional.
If you have food safety questions you can call the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-674-6854 or email MPHotline@usda.gov.
