There really is nothing like getting out of town. Any time you can get out and explore what the world has to offer is time well spent. The city just made it a little easier for folks to get down to Central Texas. Not too long ago Allegiant Air announced non stop service from Rick Husband Amarillo International to the Live Music Capitol of the World and today Southwest made a similar announcement.

Yep. The non stop from Amarillo to Austin Bergstrom International Airport will run starting March 10th at 6:10 AM... yes... it's an early flight and arrive at 7:20 in the Capitol City. the Return flight leaves Austin 7:55 and arrives here at 9:10. You can sleep in a little bit on Saturday, the departing route takes off at 11:05 and arrives in Austin at 12:23 (what's up with that odd time?) the return trip leaves moments later and gets back to Amarillo at just shy of 2:00 pm.

Austin is a great gateway.

Austin itself has plenty to offer if you're looking to get away. There's plenty of shopping, and the big yearly events like South By Southwest Music and Interactive festival, The Austin City Limits Music Festival and some more odd holidays like the celebration of Eeyore's Birthday, (leave the kids at home for this one... Major League Soccer has a team in the area and of course UT Fans have a quicker way to get in to town to see Longhorn Sports.

Besides Austin, There is plenty within an hours drive of the city including outlet mall shopping in San Marcos, Aquarena Springs, New Braunfels with its annual Wurstfest event and Schlitterbahn or perhaps a trip to Fredricksburg and Texas Wine Country. Don't get me started on Barbecue because there's just so much out there including Lockhart. and San Antonio is just a hair over an hour south on I-35

There was definitely some excitement from the Amarillo Chamber in the annoucement today:

“I can’t tell you how excited we are to not only get the daily direct flight back between Amarillo and Austin, but on a non-stop basis,” said Amarillo Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Jason Harrison. “Austin is such a valuable destination, not only from a business standpoint and with our legislators convening there, but for personal travel into the heart of Texas and all that has to offer those from the Panhandle and the Tri-State area.

Just a heads up... the Heart of Texas is actually Waco... which is about an hour and a half north too... I hear Cameron Park Zoo is nice and they got lots of Dr. Pepper out that way.
