Amarillo is a special place. We have a lot going for us. Sometimes though, it can seem like Yellow City and Rodney Dangerfield have a lot in common when it comes to getting no respect.

That's fine. At least I can set my A/C where I want to.

Technically, so can the rest of Texas. The only downside to exercising this level of personal freedom is that a lot of Texans are on the ERCOT power grid. In case you've forgotten, that's the one that made headlines for not being able to handle the cold.

Also, in case you haven't heard, they're once again making headlines by saying they can't really handle the heat.

While Lubbock may scoff at us for our lack of a "big" college, or the fact that they get bigger concerts than we do, at least we aren't having to deal with ERCOT this summer. It feels nice being in a city famous for halfway burying cars and giant steaks.

Also, we didn't jump on board with ERCOT after the winter fiasco.

Texans are furious over the whole ERCOT debacle that have to deal with it, as they should be. Every summer power companies ask customers to cut back on usage just a little bit, but leaving your thermostat in the upper 70s is ridiculous.

I do hope that this summer doesn't see any major events like the one we had in the winter. I hope everyone stays safe. In the meantime, I'm enjoying the memes and the sarcasm dripping from keyboards across the Lone Star State.

Amarillo is on the SPP, or Southwest Power Pool. While every year energy companies do recommend curbing usage during the hottest parts of summer, I imagine hearing it from ERCOT just hits you differently than hearing from a company that didn't experience so many problems.

Hopefully, many of the Texans affected by this have access to a pool to cool off in. Speaking of....

Say You're From Amarillo Without Saying You're From Amarillo

Amarillo is a pretty quirky place. We've got the Big Texan, the weird signs, and (obviously) the famed Cadillac Ranch. But more than that, there's a distinct culture of close-knit community, eccentrics, a thriving arts scene, and much more.

The point is, living in Amarillo is a unique experience. Because of that, it's really pretty easy to tell who's a native or a long-time resident. And I can prove it.

Here's a couple of ways you can say you're from Amarillo.....without saying you're from Amarillo.
