You will find a few things in life that are just downright annoying and you don't want to do.  In Texas, you are required to renew your driver's license every 8 years.  Most people don't want to have to set an appointment to go to the DPS office and wait in line (although appointments are available) just to renew their driver's license.

Most people choose to go the simpler route and renew online; this saves you a ton of time, and it is easier.  However, some changes have gone into effect with renewing your driver's license online.

What Is the TxT System in Texas?

As of May 31, 2025, you are no longer able to use the legacy Texas Driver's License renewal form that was available on the Texas website.  Texans now have to create an account on the Texas By Texas (TxT) site.  The TxT is a digital assistant that was launched in 2022.

In addition to driver's license renewal, you can also use the TxT site for vehicle registration renewal, driver's license/ID renewal and replacement, boat registration, massage license renewal, and more. In other words, this site is for your Texas government transactions.  It's just more streamlined.

If you have had to renew your license within the last three years, you are likely already familiar with this feature. If you haven't, other than having to create yet another account, then it's more streamlined.

Just follow the instructions; it only takes a few minutes.

Other Services You Can Access with TxT

Once you're registered, you can renew your license.  You can also connect to your vehicle registration, the Texas Parks and Wildlife, and even the Texas Department of Licensing.

Can You Still Renew Without Going Digital?

If you hate change and don't like everything going digital, you can still renew your driver's license by telephone, mail, or a good old-fashioned appointment at the DMV.
