An Iconic Piece of Amarillo History is on the Auction Block
A unique piece of Amarillo history is about to go up for auction. The Music Box is up for grabs, which means it could be repurposed into something entirely new, or someone with a sense of nostalgia could step in and keep the legacy alive.
The Music Box has been a staple in Amarillo since 1969 and is one of the oldest smoke shops in Texas.

When and Where the Auction Happens
Unfortunately, this longtime piece of history is going up for foreclosure auction on Tuesday, April 7th, which means by the end of the auction, the store could either remain what it’s always been or become something Amarillo no longer recognizes.
The auction will take place on the west steps of the Potter County Courthouse, beginning at 10 am and expected to end by 2 pm. Two tracts of the property will be auctioned off.
What Property Is Included in the Sale
- Tract 1: 905 S. Madison, Lot 8, Block 126 of Plemons Addition, City of Amarillo
- Tract 2: 907 Madison, Lot 7, Block 126 of Plemons Addition, City of Amarillo
Tract 1 is an apartment property next door to the iconic shop. Tract 2 is the actual Music Box that we’ve all known and loved. This is the shop itself.
Please note that the sale may be postponed or rescheduled in accordance with Texas law.
Why The Music Box Matters to Amarillo
Most people who have grown up in Amarillo or have lived here long enough have a Music Box story to tell. While most enjoyed the iconic store for the eclectic vibe and mainly went to buy tie-dyes, hair color, and jewelry (back when the tattoo and piercing shop was upstairs), others went for an entirely different reason. And yes, they did have some very pretty vases.
Either way, it's a piece of nostalgia most in Amarillo do not want to see fade away.

According to PRAD, the property was sold to the current owner in 2023. Toni Sympson previously owned the property beginning in the early 1990s.
What Happens to The Music Box Next
This could be the end of an era for this longtime Amarillo shop. For someone, this is a chance to own a piece of Amarillo history and maybe even bring it back to its former glory.
