One item may cause our Texas farmers to reconsider their crops this year, and it will cause prices to skyrocket at the grocery store. This one item will affect millions in the United States, and that is fertilizer. If you break it down even further, it is the nitrogen in that fertilizer.

What Is Nitrogen and Why Does It Matter

Nitrogen is essential for crop growth, especially for corn, wheat, and cotton. Corn is the primary ingredient in many staples like animal feed, processed food products, sweet corn, popcorn, and fuel. It's vital to the economy. Texas farmers are facing rising costs and lower profits. This means farmers will have to decide whether to plant fewer crops, switch crops, or cut fertilizer usage.

Why Fertilizer Prices Are Skyrocketing in 2026

Prices of nitrogen fertilizer have spiked in early 2026.

According to DeDe Jones at the Texas A&M AgriLife High Plains Research and Extension Center's these are the main reasons for the massive jump in fertilizer prices.

  • Nitrogen dry 46-0-0 went from $545 per ton in December to $730 per ton in March, a 34% increase.
  • Nitrogen liquid 32-0-0 went from $455 per ton in December to $510 per ton in March, a 12% increase.
  • Anhydrous NH3 went from $710 per ton in December to $900 per ton in March, a 27% increase.

From the Strait of Hormuz to the Texas High Plains

This price hike is happening because the Strait of Hormuz is closed. The Middle East is one of the largest sources of natural gas, which is used to make fertilizer. With this route shut down, our local farmers are seeing supply chains cut off and incredible increases in the cost of much-needed fertilizer.

As the deadline of Tuesday, April 7, at 7 pm to reopen the Strait of Hormuz looms, what does this mean for our farmers and consumers? If the Staright reopens, we could start seeing relief later in 2026. If it stays closed, the conflict could last indefinitely, and expect costs to continue to rise on everything.
