The Hidden Ticket Trap Many Texas Drivers Don’t Know About
Let's face it, driving in Texas can feel a little bit dangerous. This isn't about the highways and interstates. It’s about streets in cities and towns across the Lone Star State. If you ask anyone in just about any city, they'll tell you that the people don't know how to drive.
It's evident that many people lack driving skills or are completely distracted. However, every driver must complete a driver's education class or pass a test to acquire a driver's license in the state of Texas. As the years pass, it seems many of us forget the basics.
Why Using the Turn Lane Improperly Is a Big Deal
How many times have you encountered another driver using the turning lane for something other than turning? Some use it to merge because traffic is heavy. Others use it as an extra driving lane.
Did you know that using the turning lane for those two things is illegal?
What Texas Law Says About the Center Turn Lane
According to the Texas Transportation Code, Sec. 545.060, if you use the lane to make a left turn, you are only allowed to legally travel 200 feet in that lane, in preparation for your left turn.
When the Center Lane Can Be Used Safely
If you’re on a roadway with three lanes and traffic moves in both directions, the lane may be used to pass when it is safe, to prepare for a left turn, or it may be used as a driving lane only when a sign is posted allowing it.

How Far Can You Legally Drive in a Turn Lane?
If you're in the middle of a town in Texas and the traffic is insane, you cannot legally pull into the center turning lane and wait for an opening. It's not meant for a merge. You cannot drive more than 200 feet in the lane to get to your left turn. In other words, if the light has a long line and the turning lane is open, you're not supposed to drive in that lane to reach the light for your turn if it’s more than 200 feet away.
