There’s a Change Coming To AFD Recruiting
I think at one point most of us had firefighter on our list of jobs we wanted as a grown up. I'll be the first to admit somewhere in the family photo albums lost in time at my parents house is a picture of me and my younger brother playing with one of those pedal powered firetrucks going around the neighborhood back in the 1980s. I'll admit even to this day whenever the fire truck goes by the station I still get up and run outside to see where it's headed.
There's a lot of pride in the job and you can tell with the love they put into their trucks which never seem to be dirty. The city has also been upgrading stations too to help with response times. I'll admit I got to play with a hose once and let me say this, It ain't your garden hose... its a beast with a mind of it's own and with a mastery level to go with it.
Well if your dream is to become an Amarillo firefighter, the path may become a little easier starting next year. In the past in order to qualify you already had to have a firefighter certification and EMT Basic certifications here in Texas. The department is hosting it's academy starting in January which will take applicants who may not be certified and get them trained and credentialed. This is really neat because it opens the door for folks here in the Amarillo area who may not have qualified otherwise but would make great candidates and in turn better reflect the community here in Amarillo.
If you have a dream to be a firefighter and are between the ages of 18-35 with a High School Diploma or GED, you might just have a shot to be crew on those really cool shiny red trucks. While the official site is still under construction there's still good contact information for those who are interested.
